Völkerschlachtdenkmal

The Völkerschlachtdenkmal or Monument to the Battle of the Nations is a monument to the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of the Nations. It was paid for mostly by donations and by the city of Leipzig, and was completed in 1913 for the 100th anniversary of the battle, at a cost of 6,000,000 Goldmark.

Völkerschlachtdenkmal

Between 16th to the19th of October 1813, the Battle of the Nations was fought by the coalition armies of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden against the French army of Napoleon aided by Polish and Italian troops as well as German-speakers from the Confederation of the Rhine. Napoleon's army was defeated and compelled to return to France while the Allies invaded France early the next year. Napoleon was forced to abdicate, and was exiled to Elba that spring.

A Pair Of Virginals

Virginals

A virginal, also called Virginals, or Pair Of Virginals, is a musical instrument of the harpsichord family. The virginal may take its name from Latin virga (“rod”), referring to the jacks, or wooden shafts that rest on the ends of the keys and hold the plucking mechanism. Unlike the harpsichord and spinet, the virginal’s single set of strings runs nearly parallel to the keyboard.

The Lady by the Lake

The Cospudener See (sometimes translated as Cospuden Lake) is a lake situated south of Leipzig. It is on the site of a former open cast mine. The lake has become highly popular with the local population, with long stretches of sand beaches (some clothing-optional, following the East German tradition of public nude bathing) and with a sauna directly located at the lake. There is also a small sailing harbour. source: Wikipedia

Going Underground

The journey of the first Tube train took place on 9 January 1863 and the  first Tube line built and financed by a private company was the Metropolitan Railway. The Tube’s first escalator was installed at Earl’s Court in 1911, featuring a diagonal finish to the stairway, meaning the right foot reached the top moments before the left and in 1907 a spiral escalator opened at Holloway Road.

The Underground

The “Tube” became a proper name for the first time in the early 1900s, after the Central London Railway (now the Central Line) was nicknamed the “Twopenny Tube”. The “Twopenny Tube” nickname was conceived by the Daily Mail, five days after it opened. When the Circle Line opened in 1884, the experience of riding it was described in The Times as “a form of mild torture”.
