Making an optical lens

Having recently got into photography I can admit I have no idea how the device works on a technical basis. I have especially little idea about lenses and how they are made. This video from the Discovery Channel (quality is not great) gives a pretty good rundown of how a lens is made. It is pretty fascinating to see how much is done by hand and not just run through a machine and how many stages there are in the whole process. My favourite part was actually when they showed how they engraved the lens information onto the lens barrel.

Famous Photos in History in Colour

An amazing set of pictures by Reddit user mygrapefruit and self-taught picture colourer Sanna Dullaway.

I have always wondered how one would go about colouring in a black and white image and here is how one artist, I_COLORED_IT_FOR_YOU, approaches a picture.

When doing serious colorizations, I do as much research as possible. This would involve finding color images of 1920s fashion, an updated image of the architecture and funny you should mention the color of trees as I've even researched the type of tree and used images of the bark and leaves in order to get the color just right. However, in my free time when I've been colorizing random images on Reddit, it's about 90% guesswork. I play around a lot more with the color to what I think 'looks best', so its much more of an educated guess. :)

Seeing is Believing?

"The McGurk effect is a compelling demonstration of how we all use visual speech information. The effect shows that we can't help but integrate visual speech into what we 'hear'."

This is pretty cool. I remember seeing this when it first came out and was amazed by it. Try it, it really does work...

The Harpsichord Maker

The Harpsichord Maker from Morgan Inglis on Vimeo.

I love theses videos. Mainly to see people creating these amazing instruments. This type of job really is a "follow your dreams" type job. This is not something you fall into, this is something you really want to do.

Who ya gonna call? SHATNER! I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!

TIL Die Hard was Alan Rickman's first film

This is one of those facts that I must have known, and if I didn't then why not?

die hard

Hans Gruber
Played By: Alan Rickman
Film: Die Hard
Why He's On The List: Acclaimed British stage actor Alan Rickman hadn't made a movie before Die Hard. With all due respect to his wonderful career since, he might as well have stopped there, for there's no topping Hans Gruber. There are scarier villains, there may even be more iconic villains, but when it comes to slickness, suaveness, and coolness, Gruber has 'em licked. Endlessly quotable, Gruber's mind is as sharp as his suit and neat goatee - and the biggest testimony to Rickman's charismatic performance is that part of you wants him to get away with it.

Finest Hour: The moment when, after hours of hard work, the Nakatomi vault opens, and Gruber is bathed in heavenly light as the fruits of his labour appear. Of course, two hours later, he's sidewalk squelch, but never mind.
