The Könneritzbrücke was originally built in 1869 as a wooden bridge over the Weiße Elster to connect Schleußig and Plagwitz. In 1899 the wooden bridge was replaced with an iron structure.
The bridge was named after Baron Léonce-Robert of Könneritz a German landowner, lawyer and conservative politician, born in Paris in 1835, who was in 1876 Kreishauptmann (a senior administration official) in Leipzig.
In 2002 the bridge was renovated by the Central German Mining Service GmbH. The bridge was lifted and removed by crane for renovation. The bridge was strengthened at a cost of 900,000 Euros.
