According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest snowflake on record measured 38cm wide and 20cm thick. It was observed in Montana, USA in 1887 and described by witnesses as "larger than a milk pan".
It is a myth that Eskimos have 100 different words for "snow".
It is never too cold to snow but it is more unlikely that snow will fall when the temperature drops well into the negative numbers. The heaviest snowfalls occur between –4° C and 0° C. Below -33° C very little precipitation can be produced; ice crystals can form but rather than aggregating to form snowflakes, they remain very small and light. Often this means that they are held aloft by updrafts in the atmosphere. When they do fall to Earth we get the phenomenon ‘diamond dust’.
Chionophobia is a fear of snow.
In November 2010 a snowball fight in Leipzig between around 50 people turned bad. It quickly escalated when participants began aiming at luxury cars, passerby, supermarkets, buses and trams. The fight escalated to more than 500 people who began hurling bottles, snowballs and even setting fires in the street.
In January 2010, 67 people were briefly detained after a snowball fight that began with 30 people turned into a 200-person brawl that resulted in shattered store windows and a small fire. During that fight, police were forced to redirect bus traffic until the fight was cleared.
To walk on ice, keep your center of gravity over your front leg. Think of yourself as a penguin an you'll be all right.
